Belle & Sebastian

A new Belle and Sebastian release is always something to cheer. So three new releases leads to the inevitable conclusion: three cheers! Here is the latest installment in a career that has always pursued a singular and delightful vision of what pop represents and what it can achieve, a career that has seen them triumph against the odds to win a Brit award, be one of the first bands to curate their own festival, and play at the official London residence of the US ambassador (the last president’s ambassador, not the current one’s). Murdoch, as ever, is not the only writer. Sarah Martin (violin/vocals) brought in the delicious ‘The Same Star’, which marries Belle and Sebastian’s melodiousness to a pounding Motown backbeat, and was produced by Leo Abrahams (Ghostpoet, Wild Beasts, Regina Spektor). “We’d met Leo in February of 2016, and I’d say that meeting and the recording of ‘I’ll Be Your Pilot’ were the first tangible steps of this EP project,” Martin says. “We didn’t have a stack of songs to play him, but we liked him and he became a part of the plan from that point - and when I’d got to a point with ‘The Same Star’ where it just needed to be recorded, I thought it could benefit from having a producer to steer things, and fortunately we had a slot in the diary marked ‘Leo’ coming up. It’s not a song we’d laboured over playing for months - it fell together quite quickly thanks in large part to Bob’s [Bobby Kildea, guitarist] enthusiasm and Stuart’s willingness to dismember an old song and repurpose the break, so that it wasn’t just the same three chords over and over and over.” There’s one big reason why 15 songs are coming out on three EPs, rather than one album. “We’d made a couple of LPs, Tigermilk and If You’re Feeling Sinister, within the space of six months,” Murdoch says, remembering the early days of the band’s career, and how that fed into their decision-making this time.

Room Inside The World [LP]

New Vinyl: $18.98   $16.98 Buy

Single LP on black vinyl in gatefold sleeve with matte finish. Includes 12” x 12” printed insert. Includes coupon for full download.

On Room Inside the World—Ought’s third album and their first for Merge—growing up doesn’t mean mellowing out so much as it means learning to pay attention, listening carefully and openly, staying somewhere long enough to really understand where you are. Recorded at Rare Book Room in Brooklyn with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Silver Jews), Room Inside the World explores themes that have always concerned the band—identity, connection, survival in a precarious world—but with a bolder, more nuanced sound palette. Vibraphone, justly intonated synthesizers, drum machines, and a 70-piece choir suffuse the precise post-punk breakdowns that spangled Ought’s first two albums, giving rise to an emotional complexity that pushes their characteristically taut sound to greater depths.

Morbid Angel, the true forefathers of death metal music, triumphantly return with their 9th studio album Kingdoms Disdained, to be released on Silver Linings Music. Kingdoms Disdained finds legendary guitarist and founder Trey Azagthoth reigniting his creative alchemy with vocalist/bassist Steve Tucker to create a crushingly heavy and highly apocalyptic soundtrack for these increasingly dark times. Relentless and unrepentant Kingdoms Disdained abounds with sheer, brutal power, complex changes and a gloriously violent death metal underpinning, an album designed to confront fans and non-believers alike, with Tucker’s lyrics destined to spark deep conversation on several angles of mysticism and darkness. “Garden of Disdain” proclaims ’this world of useless being, this endless festering’ as the unceasing riff's weight further augments the song’s meaning, while the barbaric barrage of “Architect and Iconoclast” roars ‘I am all prophecies fulfilled, yet you refuse to see this.' Azagthoth produces some of his finest work yet, his demonically-heavy riffs and lead work finding a powerful delivery vehicle via the strength of Scotty Fuller’s insane percussion and Tucker’s relentless vocal savagery. The supreme solo during “The Righteous Voice” underscores Azagthoth’s unique creative arrangements, and in “For No Master”, Azagthoth illustrates that no guitarist in the genre orchestrates, and translates, dark chaos so masterfully. Wrapped in a thick wall of death metal sound, Kingdoms Disdained was recorded at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, FL and produced by Morbid Angel with Erik Rutan (produced albums by Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal, Six Feet Under, Belphegor and many more). It will unequivocally and unapologetically reset the bar for dynamic death metal music, and only the scared, the meek or the ignorant would wilfully deny themselves a taste of Kingdoms Disdained.

Uncle, Duke & The Chief [LP]

New Vinyl: $22.98   $19.98 Buy

Produced by Richard Swift (Foxygen, The Shins), Uncle, Duke & The Chief is a record less concerned with what sounds hip than what feels good. In the Ruffians case that meant shedding some of their more arty influences (the Pixies, Talking Heads) and reconnecting with the sounds they first heard on their parents turntables as kids: Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, and pre-psychedelic Beatles. It s about going back to the deepest, most satisfying itch to scratch, says lead singer Luke Lalonde. And in doing so, the album takes you back to a time when the Ruffians sounded less like a band and more like a gang, raising a wild ruckus and speaking in telepathic tongues.

911 [Vinyl Single]

New Vinyl: $15.98 Buy

Mt. Si is a collaborative project among three friends Sarah Chernoff of Superhumanoids, Jesse Kivel from Kisses and Michael David of Classixx. The three Los Angeles natives began working together during the recording sessions for Classixxs debut, Hanging Gardens. Michael asked Sarah and Jesse to contribute guest vocals to the album, and it became quickly clear in the studio that they had chemistry as collaborative group. From there, Mt. Si took shape. The breakout Limits EP by Mt. Si, released by Cascine in early 2016, boasts four dazzling examples of fluid, stylish electronic pop. The trio returns to form this winter with their latest release a new three-track 12 called 911. The title track draws a clear arc from Limits with a blissful melody, highlighted by a reed instrumental rework of the track, whereas the b-side delivers the sensual deep groove Annie. Overall, 911 is electronic pop at its most refined.

Nina Simone

Nina's second album for her new label Colpix, Nina Simone At Town Hall was largely recorded in concert at New York City's Town Hall on 15 September 1959. Some of the songs featured in the concert were subsequently re-recorded in a studio the following month, with the album being released before the year was out. Most of the material on the album was either written or arranged by Nina herself, but there are interesting interpretations of Billie Holiday's Fine And Mellow and the standard Summertime.

Loma

Loma [LP]

New Vinyl: $17.98   $15.98 Buy

Loma's enigmatic debut feels beautifully adrift in time and space. It's an album that takes you to a place you've never been, with a rare confidence in the strength of its own vision. Though it was recorded off a dirt road in rural Texas, there's no hint of country here: from the first airy notes of "Who Is Speaking?" to the decaying choir of "Black Willow," Loma create a hypnotic world of their own, where rustling leaves, fuzzed-out basses, panting dogs, prepared pianos, and a wilderness of percussion form a backdrop for Emily Cross's translucent voice. She's a steady, clear-eyed presence throughout, even among the heart-pounding pulses of "Relay Runner", the skittering drums of "Dark Oscillations" and the galloping release of "Joy"; in sparer songs like "Shadow Relief" and the haunting "I Don't Want Children," she's a fearless ally, swimming calmly with you against a powerful undertow. Loma is inviting but also beautifully self-contained, like a dream that stays with you all day. There's something here for lovers of Nina Nastasia or Broadcast, but also Linda Thompson, or The Silver Apples—even early Pink Floyd. But most of all, this arresting and mysterious album marks the arrival of a band whose first steps already feel timeless. Loma was recorded by the group at Dandy Sounds Studios in Dripping Springs, Texas and mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound. Loma is Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski (Cross Record), and Jonathan Meiburg (Shearwater).

What A Time To Be Alive [LP]

New Vinyl: $17.98   $15.98 Buy

Single LP on black vinyl in gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeve. Includes coupon for full download.

After the shocking, and for many, demoralizing result of the 2016 election, “I didn’t buy the silver lining some were promoting that ‘well, at least art and music will be great now!’,” says Superchunk co-founder and frontman Mac McCaughan. “Obviously, any sane person would gladly trade four to eight years of terrible music for not having our country dismantled to satisfy the whims of a vengeful child and his enablers.”

That said, good music and art still have a lot to say, and the urgency of current events gave Mac, Laura, Jim, and Jon the momentum to make something new sooner than later. “It would be strange to be in a band, at least our band, and make a record that completely ignored the surrounding circumstances that we live in and that our kids are going to grow up in.” Enter What a Time to Be Alive, Superchunk’s first album in over four years, out February 16, 2018, on Merge Records. It’s a record, says Mac, “about a pretty dire and depressing situation but hopefully not a record that is dire and depressing to listen to.”

I'm With Her

See You Around is the full-length debut from I'm With Her, featuring multi-Grammy-Award-winners Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan. Before coming together these artists co-founded seminal bands (Nickel Creek and Crooked Still) and since have collectively contributed to critically acclaimed albums from esteemed artists including Yo-Yo Ma, The Civil Wars, Kris Kristofferson, John Mayer, Alison Krauss, John Prine, and many more. This much anticipated release reveals the commitment to creating a wholly unified band sound. With each track born from close songwriting collaboration, I'm With Her builds an ineffable magic from their finespun narratives and breathtaking harmonies. The result is a collection both emotionally raw and intricate, with layers of meaning and insight within even the most starkly adorned track. Co-produced by Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Laura Marling, Paul McCartney) and the band and recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in a tiny English village near Bath, See You Around delivers a warmly textured sound that proves both fresh and timeless.

Ryan Driver "wouldn't care to know" how to classify his music. After all, to attempt to bottle a sound as instinctive as his would be to do it a disservice. Inspired by the more adventurous figures of jazz and other musical genres, Driver turns off the guiding light of traditional form and convention and instead reaches in the dark for something more profound, his every note, melody and lyric a question thrown out into the universe. He may never quite find the answers, but it's in the act of searching that he carves out his musical identity.
