RHINO SUMMER OF LOVE

RHINO SUMMER OF LOVE

Five decades ago, in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, a social movement was growing. Young people, with heads full of progressive ideas and evolving attitudes toward sex, drugs and rock and roll, were converging on the area to celebrate their personal freedom–an extension of that January’s “Human Be-In” in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The “Summer of Love,” as it was called, was the birth of the modern counterculture, and music played an integral role in the shaping, influencing and mainstreaming of these daring new ideas. Rhino Records is celebrating that historic period with 18 catalog titles throughout July–including new compilations and vinyl reissues of classic albums. More information and details of the releases coming from Rhino as part of the Summer Of Love program can be found Here.

VIOLENT FEMMES - Two Mics & The Truth: Unplugged & Unhinged In AmericaVIOLENT FEMMES - Two Mics & The Truth: Unplugged & Unhinged In America - PIAS AmericaVIOLENT FEMMES - Two Mics & The Truth: Unplugged & Unhinged In America
Two Mics & The Truth: Unplugged & Unhinged In America is the legendary '80s folk-punks' follow up to last year's critically acclaimed, 'We Can Do Anything'. All of the songs on Two Mics, including iconic favorites such as "American Music" and new hits like "Memory", were recorded during sessions at various radio stations across the country. Violent Femmes came together in 1981 and were quickly applauded as one of the most inventive and original bands of the era, constantly pushing forward with their singular blend of folk and punk, sarcasm and spirituality. The Milwaukee-based band first attracted attention while busking in front of their hometown's Oriental Theatre. The performance caught the ears of that night's headliners, Pretenders Chrissie Hynde and the late James Honeyman-Scott, who invited the young group to open the sold out concert with a brief acoustic set. From there Violent Femmes released eight studio albums and more than a dozen iconic singles. Violent Femmes' remarkable three-decade-plus career has earned them cumulative worldwide sales in excess of 10 million, with 1983's Violent Femmes awarded with RIAA platinum certification eight years after it's initial release.

FOSTER THE PEOPLE - Sacred Hearts Club - Sony
Sacred Hearts Club, is the new album from Foster The People. The album is available on CD, followed by the vinyl LP on August 11th. The album includes the lead single, "Doing It For the Money," and other tracks like "Pay The Man" and "SHC," all three of which were released earlier on the digital EP entitled III. Other new tracks include "Time To Get Closer," "Harden the Paint," "I Love My Friends," and others. Founded in in 2009, Foster the People achieved success with the 2011 release of its debut album Torches, which has sold nearly two million albums and over nine million singles worldwide. Torches features the #1 hit single "Pumped Up Kicks," which was declared "the year's anthem" by SPIN, and also spawned the chart topping singles "Don't Stop (Color On The Walls)," "Houdini,", and "Helena Beat." The band garnered three Grammy nominations for its monumental debut, including Best Alternative Album, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Pumped Up Kicks" and Best Short Form Music Video for "Houdini." Foster The People followed their debut with the full length album Supermodel, which was influenced by frontman Mark Foster's world travels and shifting perspective. Supermodel was recorded in studios around the world and features fan favorites including "Coming of Age" and "Best Friend."

TYLER, THE CREATOR - [Scum Fuck] Flower Boy - Sony
Flower Boy, is the new and long awaited album from Tyler, The Creator. The album follows up 2015's Cherry Bomb. The first track and self-directed video to be released from FLOWER BOY was "Who Dat Boy" featuring A$AP Rocky, along with a second track "911/Mr. Lonely," which feature Steve Lacy and Frank Ocean, respectively. FLOWER BOY is a 14-song album, and the physical version of the CD features two unique covers, the first one designed by Tyler himself and the other by artist Eric White. It is only fitting that Tyler would commission White, whose paintings have been described by Leah Ollman of The Los Angeles Times as being "nostalgic and at the same time also vaguely futuristic, even dystopian," to visually articulate the world of FLOWER BOY.

CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD - Barefoot In The Head - Silver Arrow Records
The Chris Robinson Brotherhood release their new album, 'Barefoot In The Head,' on Silver Arrow Records. The 10-track effort, self-produced by the band, marks a third collection of new material in only two years time. For the fourth year in a row, The CRB will play over 120 shows with summer tour dates already announced and fall tour dates to be released shortly.

STU LARSEN - Resolute

STU LARSEN - ResoluteSTU LARSEN - Resolute - Nettwerk RecordsSTU LARSEN - Resolute
Australian singer/songwriter Stu Larsen returns with Resolute, the follow up album to his debut release Vagabond.  Larsen recorded Resolute with impromptu voice memos on his phone, architecting a primitive framework for the songs. As Larsen combed through hundreds of files, he tucked himself away in different locations to write the demos - a cottage in Scotland, an apartment in Spain and an army bunker in Australia.  Long-time friend, producer and songwriter Luke Thompson eventually joined him at Mike Rosenberg’s (aka Passenger) studio in Brighton to finish up the demos. With the ideas solidified, Larsen got more than he bargained for on a stopover for a wedding in Indonesia before formal recording took place in Australia... “My appendix burst,” he sighs. “I had to have the operation there. I couldn’t fly. I was recovering for about 10 days. Luke knew the songs so well that he was able to start the recording without me, thankfully. Although, I wasn’t there for the first two weeks, it was pretty amazing to come into what he put down.” Back on his feet, Larsen finished the new album’s ten songs. Larsen previewed Resolute with a rough demo of “By The River” that quickly earned half a million Spotify streams. “By The River” is an airy love letter to a New Zealand river that was an arduous process to complete. The song culminates on a wiry and wild solo that, as he describes it, “is the sound of frustration being worked out through my guitar.”

New Release Round-Up 07-14-17

New Releases - July 14 2017

OH WONDER - Ultralife - Republic
Republic Records release Oh Wonder's album 'Ultralife.' The entire album was written in New York and London, entirely composed, produced & mixed by the duo, Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West. The new album features hit track 'Ultralife.'

RAC - EGO - Counter Records
Grammy award winning artist RAC (pronounced Ar-Ay-Cee) known as André Allen Anjos releases his highly anticipated new album EGO via Counter Records. The record follows the release of Anjos 2014 album Strangers, which SPIN called, an impossibly smooth listen. With this release, Anjos is re-directing RAC to songwriting which accounts for the records intimate but full-lunged tone, as heard on the records second single I Still Wanna Know, featuring vocals and a guitar solo from Weezer's Rivers Cuomo as well as additional production by Classixx.

SHABAZZ PALACES - Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star & SHABAZZ PALACES - Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines - Sub Pop
Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines is one of two new albums by interstellar hip-hop enigma Shabazz Palaces, aka Ishmael Butler (who, in another galaxy, performs in Digable Planets) and Tendai Maraire. Quazarz vs. the Jealous Machines, and its companion, Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star, were both produced by Knife Knights (i.b e.b.) and mixed by Blood. Both albums come out July 14th, 2017. Quazarz came to the Earth from somewhere else, a musical ambassador from his place to ours. Somehow, through fire or through fury, the Palaceer of Shabazz Palaces caught wind of the tale, and it is through his prism that we hear the story. The beach was there, and Atlaantiis, and chemical alterations and cell memories and Andre Norton, Richard K. Morgan, and always Octavia Butler. There were killings and there were votes, and brutality in both. There was sound and there were other worlds, and there was a vastness so participation sometimes came only at the edges. And the Palaceer coasted down with the alien notion, like Quazarz, and so became. On Quazarz when they look at this place they see the inhabitants, the humans, but they don’t assess as we do. And so Quazarz was sent to meet a cat with vibration, a creative and courageous, caring, compassionate dude that stood out. The dude was a drug dealer, but that was neither here nor there, until his dealings squashed the rendezvous, leaving our alien alone to figure out what this place is really all about. Coming from a simpler, more essential, innocent place, the hero could not make heads nor tails of most advancements. From an aerial view, he saw that a good percentage of earthly vibrations were on very small squares and it became his belief that this world was very disposable and the spans short. His opinion was not of anything good nor bad but simply the truth. The machines—he noted—though at the behest of their master’s voice, are scorned, and jealous as all hell. And so the tale is told while surfing on the board of Shabazz Palaces, with its sturdy base angled for takeoff on a new trajectory. There is new blood and space and room to be different and have different assets and different art and different ways to talk and also open up some space inside to do something new. There are pages and there are drawings, and color and faces and inked dialogues written in ancient futuristic hieroglyph. There are scales and there is melody and there are Sunny days and there is Darkness, but that—it should be noted—to the Palaceer is not a lack of illumination or brightness. Maybe it is dark, but in it is always optimism and joy, a bright darkness and a full, hopeful one as well.

SILVERSTEIN - Dead Reflection - Rise Records
"While it’s difficult for any artist to find and gain success, the real struggle comes with sustaining it. Silverstein are one of those rare artists that have found a way to stand the test of time. Their formula is no secret: they have been going at full speed, nonstop for the past 17 years. They’ve taken no breaks between touring and recording, and have consistently produced quality albums and played sold out shows across the world. Since their inception, they’ve played over 1,800 shows and sold over 1 million albums. The band’s most recent headline tour resulted in 90% sell out business, while playing 1,000 capacity venues in 40 US major markets. Silverstein will also be appearing on the entire 2017 Vans Warped Tour, proving that the band’s relevance is still thriving. Silverstein’s newest album, “Dead Reflection” is one of the band’s strongest albums to date. These 12 songs are each uniquely crafted to showcase the band’s signature mixture of emotional screams and soaring melodies. Every band writes one record that truly captures their essence and showcases their character. It is the album immediately recommended when discovering a band’s discography. This will become Silverstein’s trademark album. “Dead Reflection” is a timeless album. This is Silverstein at the top of their game, and they are proving that after 17 years of continued success, they can still bring something new and exciting to the table."

WAXAHATCHEE - Out In The Storm - Merge Records
Out In The Storm, Katie Crutchfield’s fourth album as Waxahatchee and her second release with Merge, is the blazing result of a woman reawakened. Her most autobiographical and honest album to date, Out in the Storm is a self-reflective anchor in the story of both her songwriting and her life. As Crutchfield prepared for the release of her Merge debut Ivy Tripp, she found herself depleted emotionally and professionally amidst the dissolution of a noxious relationship. “Ivy Tripp doesn’t really have any resolution. It’s a lot of beating around the bush, and superficially trying to see my life clearly, but just barely scratching the surface. Out in the Storm digs into what I was going through without blinking. It’s a very honest record about a time in which I was not honest with myself.” The album was tracked at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia with John Agnello, a producer, recording engineer, and mixer known for working with some of the most iconic musicians of the last 25 years, including Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. Agnello and Crutchfield worked together for most of December 2016, along with the band: sister Allison Crutchfield on keyboards and percussion, Katherine Simonetti on bass, and Ashley Arnwine on drums; Katie Harkin, touring guitarist with Sleater-Kinney, also contributed lead guitar. At Agnello’s suggestion, the group recorded most of the music live to enhance their unity in a way that gives the album a fuller sound compared to past releases, resulting in one of Waxahatchee’s most guitar-driven releases to date.

ASHEVILLE --  Riding the wave of their critically acclaimed 2015 album, Lost at Last, Jon Stickley Trio independently releases their 3rd full length album, Maybe Believe, on May 12, 2017. Jon Stickley Trio combines Jon Stickley’s rapid-fire flatpicking guitar with the sultry and wild, yet refined, melodies of Lyndsay Pruett on violin set over the deep groove of Patrick Armitage on drums.

“The latest record from the Jon Stickley Trio flexes new and strong muscles, utilizing more progressive structures and deeper pockets than ever before,” says Producer Dave King (Of The Bad Plus). “All the while, the group retains its place as a modern-thinking acoustic ensemble with one foot in tradition and the other in a bluegrass honored future that allows for the avant garde, punk, and be bop to mix in freely and tastefully.”

Record Store Day 2017

Record Store Day 2017

“I’m thankful that some people still focus on albums and physical copies,” said Steve Martin Founder of Ignition Music Garage. “The story of vinyl records is one of the few bright spots in a rapidly changing music business. I believe we need to make a statement that artists, record labels, producers, engineers, concert venues and record stores are valuable contributors to the quality of our lives. Something powerful happens when we listen in the air, together.”

(from RSD Website) This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances.

Ignition will once again be featuring; Food, Goshen Brewing Beer, Limited Edition Vinyl and Live music. Last year over 500 people gathered downtown to celebrate Record Store Day with us. We have hundreds of RSD titles ordered as well as special record label deals. “It is hard to believe that the vinyl renaissance led by Record Store Day is only 10 years old, we’re proud to have been here for the majority of them.”

“This year we are encouraging people to bring their treasured collectors’ albums to spin on 91.1 The Globe during their live broadcast. There are some very significant recordings that only surfaced for Record Store Days past, it’s time to get them out and give them a spin with all your friends.”

We decided to close the day with a national touring act on our stage and are honored to have two; Penny & Sparrow and Lowland Hum. Penny & Sparrow are on Single Lock / Thirty Tigers. John Paul White (Civil Wars) and Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes) produced their record, “Let a Lover Drown You”.

Check out the single “Finery” to hear their finely meshed voices over a great lyric.

Record Store Day - The Organization behind the magic day.

Record Store Day - The Organization behind the magic day.

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica.

This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, DJs spinning records,  and on and on. In 2008 a small list of titles was released on Record Store Day and that list has grown to include artists and labels both large and small, in every genre and price point. In 2015, 60% of the Record Store Day Official Release List came from independent labels and distributors. The list continues to include a wide range of artists, covering the diverse taste of record stores and their customers.

On the first Record Store Day, Metallica spent hours at Rasputin Music in San Francisco meeting their fans and now each year hundreds of artists, internationally famous and from the block, flock to record stores around the world for performances, signings, meet and greets and to fill their own shopping bags with music. In 2009, Jesse "Boots Electric" Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal) declared himself the "Record Store Day Ambassador" as a way of shouting out how important the stores were to artists and since then Joshua Homme (Eagles of Death Metal, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age), Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Jack White, Chuck D and Dave Grohl have worn the ceremonial sash. For 2016, that sash is based to Metallica, as a way to officially mark their involvement with Record Store Day and support of independent record stores.

Throughout its nine years, cities across the United States, including New York City, Los Angeles, Boise, Charleston and Las Vegas have declared Record Store Day an official holiday. In 2013, Co-Founder Michael Kurtz was made a Chevalier of the Ordre Des Arts et Des Letters in France, honoring Record Store Day's contribution to the cultural and artistic life of the French people. That same year, the organizers of Record Store Day accepted the Independent Spirit Award from NARM (now the Music Biz Association). In 2015, Record Store Day was named the Marketplace Ally of the Year by A2IM, an organization of independent music labels.

While there’s only one Record Store Day a year, the organization works with both independent and and major labels throughout the year to create contests, special releases and promotions in order to spotlight the benefits of supporting these independent, locally owned stores with music purchases throughout the year.   In 2010, Record Store Day coodinated its first Black Friday event, which gives record stores exclusive releases as part of the attempt to redirect the focus of the biggest shopping day of the year to the desirable, special things to be found at local stores.

Record Store Day is currently managed by Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton, in coordination with Michael Bunnell and Eric Levin. Folks wanting to contact Record Store Day are encouraged to email us at information@recordstoreday.com

Record Store Day APR 22 10:00 AM

Record Store Day APR 22 10:00 AM

A message from the folks at Record Store Day   RSD 17 Releases

Ten years ago, we celebrated the first Record Store Day and since then we've consistently tried to keep our promotion of your stores fresh and give you, customers and the press new things to talk about. Our Black Friday event, special single/coupon promotions year-round, Vinyl Tuesday and Indie Exclusive Color Vinyl are all examples of those things and as a way to mark our tenth anniversary, we're launching the Record Store Day Vinyl Club.

Vinyl subscription services abound these days, and in some ways, that's a great thing: the more invested in physical formats people are, the more they'll look to you as they fill out their collections. But subscription services cut record stores out completely. Our Record Store Day Vinyl Club does not. The releases we put out branded as Record Store Day Vinyl Club will be limited edition (most pressed to order!) and will only be available at your stores at regular intervals throughout the year.  We are working now with artists, managers and labels to choose titles for the Club. These may be special reissues (of classic albums and in some cases limited edition RSD titles), newly created compilations or releases, EPs, full lengths, double albums or box sets. The content will always be curated and approved by a panel of record stores and RSD Vinyl Club titles will be solicited to RSD stores only. These will cover all genres, and you'll have the opportunity to bring in which ever titles you think will work for your stores and customers. (Full disclosure: RSD will also sell a very small number of these titles, and these titles only--not regular Record Store Day or Black Friday titles--on our website, but always at a higher price (plus shipping) than your pricing will be. We are not changing our mission of driving customers into your stores.)

We know what our first three Record Store Day Vinyl Club releases will be:

RSD Vinyl Club Release #1
FOO FIGHTERS Songs From The Laundry Room  3/31/17
This four song 10" was released for Record Store Day 2015. A very limited number will be released as the first RSD Vinyl Club with a street date of 3/31.

RSD Vinyl Club Release #2
TELEVISION Live At The Old Waldorf  Street Date TBD
This double LP was released for RSD 2011 on white vinyl. The Record Store Day Vinyl Club release will be a double black vinyl set. This will be solicited by both Think Indie and Alliance shortly.

RSD Vinyl Club Release #3
THE DOORS  When You're Strange Soundtrack
The soundtrack to this film was released on CD in 2010 and has never been released on vinyl. The RSD Vinyl Club release will be a double black 140g vinyl set. The Record Store Day Vinyl Club release will be a double black vinyl set. This will be solicited by both Think Indie and Alliance shortly.
